How to increase concentration?

Concentration can be hard to achieve, specifically if the task in hand is not the one you really like doing. Take study for instance, not most of us like to study. When the work is uninteresting, we often get distracted by numerous things in our surroundings as well as our imagination.
Our mind seems to be drifting to some other space making us anxious. But, as quoted by Jack Nicklous, “Concentration is a fine antidote to anxiety”.
Concentration! How do you achieve it? It is easily achievable?
Concentration can be achieved through different techniques one can follow over a course of time. But, the key ingredients are determination and practise.
These techniques can be classified in two categories:
-Long Term
-Short Term

  1. Long Term Techniques:
  1. Take Rest: It is psychologically proven fact that proper rest is essential to help concentrate. Lack of rest causes the thoughts to scatter. Make sure you get the right amount of sleep and that too at proper hours.
    Also it is necessary to keep in mind to sleep as per what is essential and not do oversleeping. Oversleeping will make your mind lazy. Better opt to putting an alarm to get a timed sleep.
  2. Make a Plan: It is very important to make a plan. When we don’t have a proper plan we often get distracted to other activities like checking emails, getting involved in texting or browsing the net. Without a purpose, one just tends to waste their time, without doing any productive work. It is important to plan out for the task and how do you wish to go about it. Also keep some time for breaks, entertainment, study and sleep.
  3. Meditate: It is one factor that will definitely help to improve concentration. When we meditate, concentration is the first thing we try to master. Hence, meditation helps us work specifically on the concentration techniques.
  4. Choose a place for concentration: Everybody has some places where they are able to concentrate better. It maybe a library, a park or your own room. Find a place with less activity and get going.
  5. Develop a controlled and a healthy diet: Eating more can cause indigestion and make a person uncomfortable and sleepy. It is important to maintain a proper fixed diet. And remember we rarely regret eating less.
  6. Exercise frequently: Our physical condition is one other factor that determines ones concentration. Essentially keep  proper and healthy physical conditions.
  7. Take Breaks: Working all the time in the same place can drive anyone insane. It is important to take breaks constantly. It will make you active and help concentrate better.

II.      Short Term Techniques (Quick Fixes):
  1. Use earplugs: When you are in a distracting environment use earplugs, they help a lot. Earplugs can be uncomfortable, so it is important to take enough breaks.
  2. Make a tally chart: Divide it into three parts morning, afternoon and evening. Whenever your mind seems to wander off, look at the specific section. It helps you make your concentration better. It helps realise the task at hand.
  3. Set certain free time: Set a time to let your brain drift off. Now, if your brain starts drifting during some other time, tell yourself you have laid a time for it and go back to your activity.
  4. Help improve the blood flow to your brain: Blood is the main transporter of oxygen our bodies and proper oxygen in brain helps work better. So take a break and go outside for a while or indulge in some exercising.
  5. Practice doing one thing at a time and do it in completion: Often taking up many task and trying to do all at one time isn’t a very effective way of working. This causes confusion and unnecessary stress in the mind. Do one thing at a time and give it all your attention.
  6. Work at a desk and not your bed: Doing your work on the bed can be uncomfortable and make you feel sleepy easily. Try working on the desk keeping a straight back.
  7. Follow the ‘five more’ rule: Whenever you start feeling exhausted or unwilling to do some work, tell yourself just five more minutes. It can work wonders.

Remember, ‘It’s about concentration and repetition. That’s all it is.’
